Last week I received a request from a reader. A request to pay some attention to a book which he would like to sell to an Art Nouveau lover rather than to a book dealer. The book “Die Bücher der Bibel” has 102 beautiful Art Nouveau woodblock illustrations by Ephraim Moshe Lilien.
Complete Details:
Die Bücher der Bibel (Buch I)
Das Fünfbuch Mose und das Buch Josua
Überlieferung und Gesetz
From the translation by Édouard Guillaume Eugène Reuss (1804-1891)
Edited by Ferdinand Rahlwes
Illustrations by Ephraim Moshe Lilien (1874-1925)
Published by Benjamin Harz Verlag, Berlin, 1923
552 pages
Honesty compels me to tell you that unfortunately the book is not completely undamaged. But maybe there’s someone out there who loves to restore books. This book is surely worth the trouble!
In case you are interested in purchasing this book, please send me a message with your name and e-mail address and I will then send your details on to the owner of the book.

Hi Arjun, I have been thinking about your request for a while… There are still some subjects in the pipeline, but once those post have been written, I could do a post on the influence of Baudelaire’s writings on Art Nouveau… In the mean time, can you explain why you are interested in this particular topic?

It’s just that I am currently reading a book on Art Nouveau, which mentions Baudelaire: ‘For Baudelaire, the fragrance of Fleurs du mal was a parable of the “stupidity, confusion, sin, and the soiled mind” of his contemporary world. His poetry cycle is like a compendium of turn-of-the century floral mysticism, where one translates the age old language of flowers into endless roundelays of blooms and blossoms.’. This I think is a beautiful description of some of the early Art Nouveau, and a similar mindset of decadence can be seen in works by Beardsley. Although a big ask, I wanted to have a clearer view of Baudelaire’s role in the movement.

That’s great! Do they have the same style? And are you collecting, or selling them?
