Those who have been reading my blog for a few years know that I love participating in the Coup de Fouet International Congress. In 2013, I wasn’t aware of its existence yet, but in 2015 I was invited as their ‘blogger in residence’. Because I enjoyed the congress so much in 2015, I decided to submit my own paper in 2018. My paper was accepted and I got to present it right after key note speaker Debora Silverman. This wonderful congress is organised by the Art Nouveau European Route (Barcelona City Council in collaboration with Barcelona University), in Barcelona.

In case you are wondering what this Art Nouveau European Route does: the Art Nouveau European Route brings together local governments and other institutions in a common quest for the protection, promotion and diffusion of Art Nouveau heritage. While this heritage is mostly tangible – physical elements of outstanding artistic and architectural interest and beauty – it is also intangible, inasmuch as it embodies and helps to explain and understand the recent history and idiosyncrasy (individualizing characteristics) of our communities. To fully explore and bring to light the value of Art Nouveau heritage, the coupDefouet magazine is published twice a year, and a Congress organised every two years.

IV coupDefouet International Congress 2023
The main thematic strand of this fourth edition of the congress The Movement for a New Art and National Identities: Art, Society and Thought seeks contributions on the relationship between cosmopolitan modernity and the formation of National identities at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The second strand focuses on Decorative Programmes of Buildings in addition to linking these to restoration initiatives that have made it necessary to recover 19th-century techniques and trades. A third strand will be dedicated to Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner (as 2023 marks the centenary of his death), and more specifically to exploring his international connections and influences throughout the world. And as usual, the fourth strand will be presenting Research and Doctoral Theses in Progress on any Art Nouveau-related topic.

The Congress sessions will commence on 29 June and run until Saturday 2 July. However, as is traditional for a coupDefouet Congress, a broad range of cultural activities and heritage visits related to Art Nouveau will take place during the period between 25 June and 9 July. These will be free of charge for all those registered for the Congress, so I strongly suggest that you take this into account when planning your flights and hotel!

For the location of the congress they have decided on the beautifully restored Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner (1849-1923). I visited the place in 2015 when restorations were still in full swing. But from what I have seen in recent publications, the venue is now a spectacular place to meet and I am looking forward to seeing the result of the restoration works already!

Call for Papers
To submit a paper to the consideration of the Scientific Committee of the 4th coupDefouet International Congress on Art Nouveau, please follow the steps below on the page How to submit a paper. The final deadline for submissions is 15 November 2022.
Registration
The registration fee includes attendance at the sessions and snacks during the breaks, as well as official meals and activities organised and scheduled around the Congress. The special early bird registration fee of €150 will only be valid until 15 November 2022, after which it will increase to €200. Art Nouveau Club members, however, can enjoy an even lower price: log in to your private club area on the website to access your discount.
All information about the congress registration fees & early bird discount can be found here.

This is so exiting to look forward to! The whatsapp-group for Art Nouveau aficionados I am in is buzzing and the outline of my proposal is already forming in my head. I ‘only’ have to write it down now. Will you be there too next year?
